ABS and HD Hyundai will develop their existing partnership on autonomous technologies across a range of areas under a new deal signed at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Four main areas were identified in the new deal, with joint development projects expected to be launched in the first quarter 2023:

  • Artificial Intelligence-based Autonomous Machinery Health Management Function (HiCBM)
  • Artificial Intelligence-based Autonomous Safety Management Function (HiCAMS)
  • Artificial Intelligence-based Autonomous LNG Fuel Gas Supply System (Hi-GAS+ SMART FGSS)
  • Artificial Intelligence-based Smart LNG Boil-off Gas Management System (Hi-GAS+ AI CHS)

ABS and HD Hyundai have a history of co-operation under a framework agreement on autonomous technology projects signed at last year’s CES.

That agreement brought the autonomous sailing of LNG carrier Prism Courage through ABS’ work with HD Hyundai Subsidiaries Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and Avikus.

Prism Courage sailed half of a transpacific voyage in autonomous mode to demonstrate Avikus’ technology, with the 180,000 cu m LNG carrier under direct supervision for the duration of the exercise.

“The Prism Courage voyage was a milestone for the entire shipping industry and demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence and autonomous functions to contribute to safe navigation at sea,” said ABS Chairman, President and CEO, Christopher Wiernicki.

“HD Hyundai is one of the most advanced companies in developing and commercializing autonomous navigation technology. We are excited to expand our work with ABS, a leader in the industry in supporting autonomous projects. Through this agreement with ABS, we expect to further advance autonomous vessel technology that will support autonomous engine room operations as well as safety management,” said Ki-sun Chung, President and CEO of HD Hyundai.
