Located in Antwerp, the refuelling station will use green hydrogen to fuel ships, tube trailers and road vehicles. The development will also enable Hydroville, the world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger ship, will be able to refuel at the station instead of using a tube trailer.

“In the  future ports will become hydrogen hotspots, because they have a large concentration of applications that are difficult to electrify. In addition, many ports will have access to hydrogen, either through large electrolysis plants or through imports. We are therefore very pleased that, after two and a half years of development, we are now able to put the station into operation,” said Roy Campe, CTO CMB.TECH.

The refuelling station is positioned at Port House to serve both the industrial needs of the port while enabling public access.

The refuelling station site can also pump out hydrogen to two trailer docks, and has a number of ultra-fast electric car charging stations.

Hydrogen generation by electrolysis of water requires electricity. Hydrogen created using renewable energy is known as green hydrogen, is a low to zero carbon fuel in its own right, and can be used to create ammonia, another potential fuel in shipping's future zero carbon fuel mix.
