Shell has secured a LNG bunkering licence from the Gibraltar government, allowing the oil major to develop a range of LNG bunkering services in Gibraltar port.

“I am pleased to see that Shell has been successful in its application and welcome the trust and confidence that Shell continues to place in Gibraltar with the completion of its application,” said Hon. Vijay Daryanani, Gibraltar’s Minister for the Port.

The minister added that future works by Shell is in line with the “aspiration to keep Gibraltar on the leading edge of developments in the bunkering industry and to reinforce our position as a bunkering hub.”

Chief Minister the Hon. Fabian Picardo QC MP weighed in to say that Shell’s entry as a key LNG bunker player demonstrates Gibraltar’s forward-thinking approach to develop the maritime industry, as well as to embark on the transition to cleaner fuels and reduce environmental impact.

Gibraltar is Europe’s second largest bunker port selling approximately 4m tonnes of marine fuels a year.
