The Singapore-registered Funing was expected to complete towage trial this morning (14 July) having been anchored safely outside the Port of Tauranga after it lost power on 6 July, temporarily closing the port until it could be towed to a safe position.
Following completion of the trial the vessel will be towed to berth for repairs and investigation with Maritime New Zealand said could take up to 14 days. Once repairs and investigations are completed the Funing will be able to continue its voyage to China.
Maritime New Zealand said that following the loss of power on July 6 the drifting vessel snagged chains holding a buoy marking the shipping channel and dive inspections have identified damage to the propeller and rudder.
