The US Coast Guard (USCG) has suspended the search for three seafarers missing from a tugboat collision in the Mississippi on Sunday.

Three crew are missing from the RC Creppel after it collided with the Cooperative Spirit on Sunday morning in the Mississippi River at mile marker 123, near Luling, Louisiana.

“Coast Guard crews searched over 835 nautical miles for approximately 67 hours but were unable to find the three missing mariners,” the USCG said in a statement.

The collision resulted in a sulphuric acid spill from a barge being towed by the RC Creppel Coast Guard said the air monitoring showed that the air in the immediate vicinity of the barge had cleared of sulphuric acid.

McKinney Salvage has been contracted to carry out salvage operations of the barge and air monitoring will continue.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
