Following its council meeting in London last week IACS said two new URs had been developed after a report on a post MOL Comfort review carried out by the IACS expert group on structural safety of containerships.

The two new requirements are the URS11A, which is a longitudinal strength standard forcontainerships, and URS34 dealing with functional requirements and load cases for directanalysis of boxships.

The URs are to be delivered in the first quarter of 2015 and are minimum technical requirements.

The MOL Comfort broke in two in the Indian Ocean last year and later sank. A report by ClassNK released at the end of September this year the Japanese-built post-panamax containership was found to be less of dealing with lateral loads than similar vessels.
