Container vessel MSC Marie became the largest neopanamax cargo ship to ever cross the waterway, breaking a record which stood for one year.
On August 30, 202,562 dwt MSC Marie became the largest cargo ship to cross the Panama Canal, breaking the record set in August 2023 by Ever Max.
Liberia-flagged MSC Marie has a length of 366 metres (1,200 feet), a width of 51 m (167.4 feet), and a maximum capacity of 17,640 teu. Previous record holder Ever Max has a capacity of 17,312 and set the bar on its maiden voyage last year.
MSC Marie arrived in Panama from Mexico’s port of Manzanillo, on a route that began in China and Korea. Its transit come at an important time for the Panama Canal, as it continues to recover from limits on vessel draught and on the number of daily transits, imposed during a prolonged regional drought.
“This achievement is a testament to the continuous efforts of the canal workers, whose commitment reaffirms the reliability and efficiency of our route,” said the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).
