ONE orders 10 methanol and ammonia-ready containerships
Ocean Network Express (ONE) is ordering 10 methanol and ammonia-ready 13,700 teu boxships.
The containerships are expected to be delivered in 2025 and 2026. Neither the yard building the vessels nor the price were disclosed.
The order comes at time when container shipping faces overcapacity as demand wanes, large amounts of new tonnage is being delivered, and supply chain congestion has eased freeing up capacity that was previously stuck waiting at ports.
ONE said the orders were part of its medium-term management plan and it was ensuring the stable deployment of new vessels without being constrained “by short-term fluctuations in the container market”.
The newbuildings will be fitted with bow covers to reduce drag, and innovation that ONE has already started to deploy on its existing vessels, causing a stir on social media.
ONE said was also in discussions with the shipyard and equipment manufacturers on implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS).
