Terminal operator PSA and shipping line Ocean Network Express (ONE) has successfully completed trials of recycling refrigerant gas from reefer containers.

Reclaiming and recycling refrigerant gas saves around 4,000kg of carbon emissions per reefer, based on 3kg of R134a refrigerant gas per reefer, according to PSA and ONE.

PSA recovers refrigerant gas from reefer containers, and the gas is then cleaned, processed and certified before it is re-used and pumped back into the reefers. ONE has validated the quality of the recycled refrigerant gas and is PSA’s first customer to use the service.

Ong Kim Pong, Regional CEO Southeast Asia, PSA International said: “Close collaboration with a shared purpose is key to achieving a resilient and sustainable global supply chain ecosystem. PSA is delighted to have ONE coming alongside us in our strive to minimise the environmental impact of our operations.”

PSA is looking to extend the service to other customers and partners
