RCL names four new container ships, orders two more

Regional Container Lines (RCL) has named four new container vessels and ordered two more at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS).

The Thai-listed shipowner named a pair of 12,000 teu newbuildings Ussama Bhum and Varanya Bhum at the Hiroshima shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding on 27 August.

The Ussama Bhum has been deployed on RCL’s Middle East trade while the Varanya Bhum will be delivered in December. The two vessels are some of the largest vessels in RCL’s fleet.

“The naming of Ussama Bhum and Varanya Bhum represents not just the growth of our fle.et but also the ongoing evolution of our services. These vessels will strengthen our capabilities, ensuring that we continue to meet the demands of our global clientele with the utmost efficiency and sustainability,” said Dr Jamlong Atikul, Chairman of RCL.

A few days later of 3 September RCL named two 7,000 teu capacity vessels Hemma Bhum and Itthi Bhum at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Yard in China. The 7,000 teu newbuildings immediately went into service with RCL and PIL.

RCL also inked contracts with SWS for two more 7,000 teu newbuildings with dual-fuel ready notation for delivery in 2026 and 2028.
