Containership tonnage provider Seaspan Corp sees strong demand for 7,000 teu newbuildings as replacement for older vessels.

Earlier this week Seaspan announced it was order ten 7,000 teu, scrubber-fitted, containerships from an undisclosed major shipyard with deliveries from Q2 – Q4 2024.

Seaspan now has a total of twenty-five 7,000 teu boxship newbuildings on order, 15 of which will have LNG dual-fuel propulsion.

“With our previously announced order of fifteen 7,000 teu dual fuel vessels, this newbuild order is further evidence of the deep customer demand for this vessel size, which is uniquely suited to replace the global fleet’s aging cohort of 4,000 to 9,000 teu vessels,” said Bing Chen, Chairman, President, and CEO of Seaspan.

Underscoring the demand from container shipping lines for new tonnage Seaspan has ordered 70 boxship newbuildings with a combined capacity of 839,000 teu since December last year.
