Westports confident of handling over 10m teu this year
Malaysia’s Westports Holdings is expecting to register a record high container throughput of more than 10m teu for this year, it was reported.
Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam, group managing director of Westports, said the forecast volume will account for about 80% of Port Klang’s overall volume.
“Westports has been the fastest growing terminal in Port Klang over the past 25 years. We should be able to achieve a double-digit percentage growth rate in 2019 over the previous year based on our current growth momentum,” Ruben was reported saying.
In 2018, Westports handled 9.5m teu, up 5.6% compared to 2017 but declined compared to 9.9m teu in 2016.
Ruben shared that Westports is currently finalising the layout design for the expansion of its container terminal facilities and additional wharves.
“These expansions would pave the way for significant further growth in the coming decades as we serve our customers, international container shipping alliances and local logistics stakeholders,” he said.
Westports, which commenced operations in 1994, has handled a cumulative total of more than 110m teu of container throughput and 250m tonnes of various conventional cargoes.
