The 19,000 teu CSCL Globe built for China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) will become the world’s largest containership in service trumping Maersk Line’s 18,000 teu triple E vessels.

The naming ceremony was attended by Xu Li Rong, chairman of China Shipping Group; Zhao Hong Zhou, managing director of CSCL; Qiu Guo Hong, Chinese ambassador to Korea; Choi Kil-seon, chairman and ceo of HHI and 150 other guests. The vessel was named by He Li Jun, wife of Xu.

The first of a series of five 19,000 teu vessels the CSCL Globe will be deployed on the Asia – Europe trade later this month. The vessel measures 400 m in length, 58.6 m in width and 30.5 m in depth.

The dramatic upsizing of containerships in recent years is illustrated by the fact that HHI named its first ever 10,000 teu ship the Cosco Asia just seven years ago in 2007. Classification societies have now developed designs for the 24,000 teu Malaccamax, and officials expect orders for the first ships to be placed with in the next two years.
