The International Labour Organisation (ILO) monthly minimum wage for seafarers will be raised to $592 from January 2015, and $614 from the beginning of 2016.

The decision was agreed at a meeting of maritime employer representatives in Geneva, in cooperation with the International Shipping Federation (ISF) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).

During the proceedings, ISF spokesman Arthur Bowring, who cited various UN publications highlighting instability in the global economy and particularly in shipping, said that “we believe the decision taken is an appropriate one that gives shipowners adequate notice to be prepared for the impact of agreed changes going forward to 2016”.
