Digital training marketplace Seably has acquired seafarer wellbeing platform WellAtSea to expand its service offering.

Seably was launched by the Swedish Shipowners’ Association in September 2020 and offers educational content to the maritime industry through its online marketplace. Denmark-headquartered WellAtSea has its operational centre in Manilla and uses various means to improve seafarer wellbeing, including through continuous organisational change.

Seably said the companies will maintain their independent branding and operations, but efficiencies will be gained through combining back-end support and investment. By integrating WellAtSea’s Manilla office into its operation, the companies will offer 24-hour support.

Gisa R. Paredes runs the WellAtSea Manila office and said its questionnaires suggest some 25% of seafarers suffer from depression and 17% present symptoms that place them on the generalised anxiety disorder scale.

"We can estimate that the costs facing companies for illness, medical repatriation and Death of a Seafarer can range anywhere from 25,000 - 105,000 Euros. This is why we must continue and expand on our work which Seably's acquisition will now accelerate," said Paredus

WellAtSea has partnerships with ship owners covering over 17,000 seafareres on more than 450 vessels, a number it says is growing daily.

The company says it uses proven, evidence-based programmes to safeguard seafarers’ physical and mental health, offering access to specialised health education, team and fitness activities and mental health support.

Andrea Lodolo, CEO of Seably, said: "This investment in WellAtSea is the beginning of Seably's journey of growth as it expands its SaaS product range. By combining the two companies, the opportunities are boundless."

Claus Sonderskov, MD, CEO and Board Member of WellAtSea, said: "WellAtSea provides easy-to-implement, platform-driven tailored programmes with a proven positive effect on the seafarers' physical and mental health and overall wellbeing for companies of any size that employees enjoy using. Together, we will provide immense value for seafarers and promote more inclusivity within the industry."
