The connection will serve the emergent car manufacturing industry in Mexico, which MOL claims is predicted to increase by more than 10% every year. “Around 3m vehicles were produced in Mexico in 2013, about 80% of which were exported,” read a company statement. “MOL assumes exports of automobiles will continue to expand.”
On the Atlantic side, three vessels – 46,346 gt Cosmos Ace, 47,519 gt Harmony Ace and 37,949 gt World Spirit – will leave weekly from Veracruz in Mexico, calling at Jacksonville, Brunswick, Baltimore, Newark and Davisville before returning to Mexico. Meanwhile, leaving from Mexico’s west coast port of Lazaro Cardenas, as-yet-undisclosed car carriers will call at San Diego, Richmond, Portland, Tacoma and Canada’s port of New Westminster.
