“Based on the communications from, and our discussions with, the national and local agencies and authorities, Vale considers, from where the situation stands, that it can continue to operate the TRMT (Teluk Rubiah Maritime Terminal),” Vale stated.

The mining giant added that it is in communication with the Malaysian government and working on a contingency plan to keep the terminal operating, while safeguarding its employees and contractors and in compliance with all the requirements made by the Malaysian authorities.

Continuing operations at the TRMT distribution center means Vale will not see 800,000 tonnes of lost iron ore shipments over the first quarter of 2020.

Last year, the TRMT handled 23.7m tonnes of iron ore shipments.

Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, Malaysia has deployed its army on Sunday to enforce the country’s stay home orders. Malaysia has confirmed a total of 1,306 cases and 10 deaths.
