The 4,250 dwt ships are under construction at Royal Bodewes in the Netherlands with delivery scheduled in 2022 and 2023. Pitched as “eco” cement carriers, the vessels will replace older vessels in the Eureka fleet and bring lower CO2 emissions for transport work.
The ships’ engines will be ready for bio-fuels and, with additional investment, could switch to green methanol in the future. Some of the vessels will also be able to take shore power in port.
“Eureka Shipping is very pleased to be able to renew and expand our fleet of cement vessels. Royal Bodewes Shipyard has built excellent ships for us in the past and with these new additions we will be able to meet increased customer demand for cement transport in Europe,“ said Kai Grotterud, Managing Director of Eureka Shipping.
Andreas Ufer, member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank said: "In order to support the transformation process towards sustainable economic and ecological development, we finance in particular future technologies that contribute to reducing global emissions."
