Norden enters port logistics with Gabon transhipment deal

Norden Norden Gabon operation
Norden is expanding into a new business area with a 10-year transhipment deal in Gabon with manganese miner Comilog.

The company is responsible for establishing and operating a transhipment station 40km outside of the main local port to allow capesizes to be loaded by barge ready for trips to Asia. The first operations took place earlier in 2022.

Norden will handle ocean freight for a portion of the transhipped cargoes. The new arrangement clears a logistical bottleneck, brings efficiency and cuts transport emissions, the companies said.

The contract with manganese mining company Comilog covers 10 years and a $40m investment in the facilities.

“Port logistics is an exciting new growth opportunity for us as we look to take our business beyond a standard freight service to an innovative supply chain partner,” said Norden CEO Jan Rindbo.

Norden’s ambition in port logistics is reflected in the establishment of a new Logistics & Climate Solutions team with responsibility for investing in port logistics with the aim to improve customer supply chain efficiency and sustainability.

Adam Nielsen, head of the new team, said: “This type of logistics solution is a natural extension of our customer service offering and we see a large potential to grow our business globally by engaging in such infrastructure development in partnership with customers.”
