Although there are no viable zero carbon fuels today CMB is offsetting all its CO2 emissions from this year and the company said it had done this by supporting certified climate projects in developing countries and acquiring high quality Voluntary Carbon Units (VCU’s).
Looking further ahead the company said it was of the opinion that it could achieve zero carbon emission shipping operations by 2050. “CMB is convinced that the shipping industry will find solutions to provide zero carbon shipping by 2050,” it stated.
CMB said it was investing heavily in the development of low and zero carbon ships and engines. CMB.TECH has developed the world’s first hydrogen powered tug – HydroTug – which will be delivered to the Port of Antwerp in 2021.
