South Korean container line HMM has completed its first trial of sustainable biofuels on a transpacific voyage.

HMM said the 13,100 teu HMM Dream was refuelled with biofuel blends during bunkering at the Port of Busan on 29 November and successfully performed a biofuel testing voyage over 10 days in the Pacific using a blend of VLSFO and biofuel.

An HMM official said, “The success of the biofuel voyage will accelerate the commercialisation of biofuels.

“We will continue to research and invest in cleaner and eco-friendly alternative fuels for ships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

A growing number of container lines are trialing drop in biofuels as they seek to reduce the vessel’s carbon footprint.
