According to a spokesman for Brise Hamburg, the ship appears to be inverted on the sea bed, at a depth of around 70 m. Lighthouse tender Pharos located the wreck using its sonar equipment.

The next step in understanding the incident will be to get a better picture of the vessel, which will most likely involved the use of a submersible remotely operated vehicle (ROV).

A ferry spotted the capsized ship on Saturday, with an extensive search operation ensuing. The eight crew of the ship, seven Polish seafarers and one from the Philippines, are missing and the search for them has been called off.

A lifeboat belonging to the ship was found adrift, but an inspection found it empty, with no sign that the boat had been occupied.

The Cemfjord underwent a five-year special survey in drydock on 13 December 2014 and was classed by DNV GL with P&I cover from Skuld, according to Equasis.

The Cemfjord was the oldest of nine cement carriers under Brise's management and was valued on the day it sank at $500,000 by vesselsvalue.com.
