Damen wins jack-up refit contract
Damen Shiprepair & Conversion subsidiary Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSV)  has won a contract to remodel Rowan Viking, a Keppel Fels ‘N’ Class Drilling Rig, for Rowan Companies.

The works, scheduled for a duration of 130 days, include extension of each leg from 170 to 180m, as well as a special periodic survey and a  number of safety modifications in compliance with Norwegian law, enabling the unit to operate in the North Sea.

The 120 tonne leg extensions will be fitted using a Palfinger Systems Jack-up Maintenance Platform (JUMP), mounted to the top of each leg and fitted with a 200m Mammoet PTC crane, which will hoist the extensions as they are attached.

“This is a unique project. A leg extension of this magnitude has never been done using this method at DSV,” says DSV commercial manager Bas Loohuis. “Using the Palfinger systems and the Mammoet crane will enable us to carry out other work while the legs are being extended, which will translate into a significant improvement in turnaround time.”

Ron Brusket, DSV’s Rowan Viking project manager, said: “This project is our industry’s Champions League. The oil and gas industry is subject to extremely high HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment and Quality) requirements. This will require us to make significant adjustments to our project organisation. The comprehensive preparations have convinced us that these adjustments will be successful; the new project organisation will serve as the foundation for future major offshore conversions.”
