Danelec launches switchable ECDIS system
Danelec Marine, a manufacturer of Voyage Data Recording (VDR) hardware, has entered the ECDIS market, bringing its quick-switch technology and potentially cutting ship downtime by days.

The switching technology, which stores the system’s entire configuration on a single memory card, enables faults in ECDIS consoles to be rectified with a replacement card inside of ten minutes, a feature previously incorporated on Danelec’s VDR systems.

The system makes use of Admiralty’s Vector Chart Service (AVCS), as well as System Electronic Navigational Charts (SENC) data  from Navtor, which can be regularly updated using that company’s Pay As You Sail (PAYS) scheme.

“ECDIS can be very unreliable, and can take days to fix – and you can’t leave port without a functioning ECDIS,” ceo Hans  Ottosen explains. “We know we can make a stable switchable system because of our experience with VDRs. We think more shipowners will be interested in switchable ECDIS.”
