Tributes from around the world were paid to Jacques R. Saadé, the founder of CMA CGM, during his funeral on Friday in Marseilles.

Saadé’s life celebrated at religious ceremony at La Major Cathedral in Marseilles and attendees included French government officials Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Elisabeth Borne, Minister of Transport, as well as numerous local, national and international officials.

Lebanese Minister Michel Pharaon, representing Lebanese President General Michel Aoun, posthumously awarded Jacques R. Saadé the Lebanese Merit Honour Medal, the highest distinction in Lebanon.

Five CMA CGM vessels (pictured above) were anchored in the Bay of Marseilles in front of the Cathedral, and all CMA CGM ships worldwide sounded their horns at midday.

Saadé died on 24 June at the age of 81. He founded Compagnie Maritime d’Affretement (CMA) in 1978 with just four employees and one ship, and today CMA CGM ranks as the third largest container line in the world.
