In a statement by the Port, it was revealed that the project aims to provide LNG as shipping fuel “by 2015 at the latest”, and will receive $46m worth of EU funding. “EU support is a clear indication of how important shipping is for sustainable transport throughout Europe," said Magnus Kårestedt, ceo at Port of Gothenburg.
Vopak and Swedegas are to build the necessary infrastructure at the port and produce LNG-handling regulations. “A major benefit of this collaboration is that we can work together and send a very clear signal to the market that LNG will be available at the largest port in Europe and the largest port in the Nordic region,” said Lars Gustafsson, Swedegas president. “The shipping companies need to be assured of this before investing in new LNG-powered vessels.”
