HHI develops new boil-off gas handling system

HHI develops new boil-off gas handling system
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has developed its own LNG handling system, re-liquefying 100% of boil-off gas for use as fuel on LNG carriers.

HHI will fit the new system on two 176,000 cu m LNG carriers, under construction for Knutsen and scheduled for delivery in 2016.

Comprised of a an ME-GI engine, a boil-off gas high-pressure compressor, a boil-off gas re-liquefaction system, an LNG fuel gas supply system (FGSS) and Hyundai integrated gas supply system (Hi-GAS), the system can re-liquefy 100% of the boil-off gas, whereas other systems can only partially re-liquefy the gas.

HHI claims an LNG carrier equipped with this system can save up to 50% of fuel compared with a conventional HFO or MGO-burning vessel, as well as massively reduce emissions.
