IMO symposium urges overhaul of safety regulations

IMO symposium urges overhaul of safety regulations
The IMO Symposium on the Future of Ship Safety held last week in London has recommended that the IMO carry out a full review of the existing safety regulatory framework, in light of “the ever-increasing pace of change and technological advancements made since the 1974 SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and the International Load Lines Conventions were adopted”.

The Symposium recommended that the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee embark on such a comprehensive review, focusing in particular on an improved capacity for data collection, in order to allow the results of new legislation to be more effectively and scientifically quantified.

“There is no doubt that more and better data, and the use of the latest methods to analyse them, are central to the development of future regulations based on risk,” commented IMO secretary-general Koji Sekimizu.

The Symposium also recommended the MSC look at “ways of encouraging a safety culture beyond mere compliance with regulatory requirements”.
