The two 400cu m vacuum-insulated LNG tanks will be the “biggest ever installed for this type of application”, according to a statement by the Linde Group, in order that the vessel will be capable of year-round operation. The tanks will be installed below-decks, and constructed at Cryo’s facility at Gothenburg, Sweden.
The vessel, to be delivered to the Finnish Transport Agency, will be able to break a 25 m channel through 1.2 m thick ice at a steady rate of 6 knots, the vessel will be capable of operating in the northernmost reaches of the Baltic sea all year round, and equipped to perform oil spill response and emergency towing operations as well as icebreaking.
"This project is an important step for the marine industry. In the wake of a growing environmental awareness and stricter emission standards there is clearly an increasing commitment to LNG as marine fuel," said Lars Persson, md of Cryo, part of Linde's Engineering Division. "We are proud to contribute to this important development. The contract award shows once again our strong market recognition for LNG fuel systems."
