LR teams up with drone specialist for improved inspections
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has signed an MoU with drone company Airobotics to help further develop LR’s use of remote access technologies as part of its Remote Presence Technology Programme.

The two companies will work together to “deliver faster, safer, more insightful and innovative services through the use of autonomous drones for pre-programmed inspection missions,” according to a statement issued at SMM.

Tel Aviv-based Airobotics has developed a fully automatic drone platform that is said to be completely self-sustained and able to carry out both pre-programmed missions and expert access on-demand. Payloads include various capture devices such as HD video, HD stills imagery and infra-red, with hyperspectral and sniffing capability under development.

“LR is committed to exploring all options that new technology brings, but only using methods that ensure we maintain our high standard of service quality,” said LR’s vp for Product and Service Innovation Ran Merkazy during a presentation on the initiative at SMM (pictured).

Airobotics ceo Ran Krauss said he believed the co-operation would “open doors to the maritime industry to reveal a new level of efficiency and innovation with our automated, industrial-grade drone solution.”
