Maersk wants shipping industry back in COP21 agreement

Maersk wants shipping industry back in COP21 agreement
One of the world’s largest shipowners Maersk wants to see shipping back in the final draft of the COP21 agreement.

The latest draft of the agreement from the Paris COP21 meeting on climate change saw both the shipping and aviation industries being removed.

In a posting on Twitter by Maersk the company’s head of positioning, risk management and climate change, group sustainability, John Kornerup Bang, said: “Shipping is out of the latest draft. We are disappointed and hope it will be reintroduced before COP21 ends.”

The statement by the Danish shipowner is at odds with major shipping organisations such as the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) that has lobbied for the exclusion of the industry from the agreement.
