Renowned Greece-based shipping journalist Gillian Whittaker dies

Renowned Greece-based shipping journalist Gillian Whittaker dies
The Greek shipping community has lost one of its best known personalities with the passing on 11 June of Gillian ‘Gill’ Whittaker after fighting a long battle with illness, in a manner that cheered friends and associates.

Born in England, Gill lived in Greece for over 40 years, launching her career as a journalist with The Associated Press before becoming a prominent shipping journalist, first as Athens correspondent for Lloyd’s List and then for almost three  decades as Athens correspondent for TradeWinds, until her retirement last year.

During her career she diligently reported on Greek shipping often lending her time to work with others including, Posidonia International Exhibitions as a press officer, and help promote shipping at international events, including those organised by Seatrade. She was a distinguished and active member of Greek Foreign Press Association for more than 30 years.

In a tribute, the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, Helmepa, said: “She has been a firm supporter of Helmepa since the very day it was launched in 1982. Gill believed in the role that every aware human being plays and his/her contribution to the joint effort towards protecting our seas from pollution. Maritime journalism is deprived of an efficient and objective member and Greece of a sincere friend.”

Last year, she received a renowned Greek, Efkranti Award, in  recognition of her work in the international promotion of Greek shipping.
