Helsinki: A new icebreaking platform supply vessel, built for shipowning giant Sovcomflot, has been named Aleksei Chirikov at a shipyard in Helsinki.

The vessel, named after the famous Russian navigator, was built by Russo-Finnish Arctech shipyard, a jv between OAO OSK and STX Finland, and is to be delivered to Sovcomflot next week, whereupon it will continue its journey to the Sea of Okhotsk and used to supply and protect the Arkutun-Dagi oil and gas field from floating ice.

Heavily winterised, the vessel has been built to operate in temperatures as low as minus 35°C and ice of up to 1.7m thick without assistance.

“This vessel will operate in the Far Eastern seas in a region that has been gaining increasing economic importance for Russia over the last several years,” said Sergey Frank, Sovcomflot President. “The ongoing development of projects on the continental shelf in the Far East with the active involvent of Russian companies will allow Russia to further strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific region.”
