Shell charters 15 LNG barges for Northern Europe inland routes
Shell Trading Rotterdam has chartered 15 new inland dual-fuel barges from Plouvier Transport and Intertrans Tankschiffahrt, running predominantly on LNG.

Built by the Dutch shipyard VEKA Shipbuilding, each 110m barge will be used to transport mineral oil products in the ARA (Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp) and Rhinetrack (Germany/Switzerland) regions, powered by Wärtsilä engines running on 95-98% LNG fuel, with a small proportion of diesel used for ignition.

Delivery of the barges is expected to take place between late-2016 and mid-2018.

“These innovative new vessels will enable a step-change in the safety and environmental performance of our barge fleet,” said Shell maritime vp Grahaeme Henderson.
