Russia’s Sovcomflot has inked lease financing and long term time-charter agreements with financial institution VEB.RF Group for its first in a series of icebreaking LNG carrier to be built to serve the Arctic LNG 2 project.

The LNG carrier will be constructed at Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in the Russian Far East.

The ship will be designed for year-round operations in the harsh ice conditions of the Kara Sea and the Gulf of Ob, and it will be able to sail independently through ice over two metres thick.

All the LNG carriers in the series will be operated under the Russian flag.

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) will provide technical supervision during the construction of the vessel series.

Sovcomflot operates a fleet of 147 vessels with a total capacity of 12.8m dwt, and more than 80 of them have an ice class.
