Stability test caused LNG bunkering leak on Norwegian ferry

Stability test caused LNG bunkering leak on Norwegian ferry
A leak during an LNG bunkering operation on a Fjord Line ferry in Norway was due to a test of the vessel’s stability taking place at the same time as refueling.

Skangass and Fjordline said that a leak of 130 kg of LNG had occurred due to movements of the ferry Bergensfjord in Risavika, which resulted on large exterior strain to the bunker hose. No-one was injured or the vessel damaged and the investigation report said the incident did not cause any danger to the passengers or crew.

”Naturally Skangass will implement all remarks and preventive actions followed by the supervision of the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) 24 June 2014, in addition to the additional safety measures already implemented,” said Tor Morten Osmundsen, managing director of Skangass.

“Skangass and Fjord Line are working closely together to make sure that preventive actions and procedures are synchronized between ship and shore. Our experiences from the incident will also be used to improve all bunkering operations by Skangass”.
