Time to get smart with your coatings choice

When marine organisms attach themselves to a ship’s hull, they increase frictional resistance which increases the amount of energy and fuel needed to propel the ship at any given speed. This is neither good for the shipowner because of the increased fuel consumption and subsequent costs, or for the environment due to a consequent uplift in stack emissions.

The sector is more focused than ever on developing efficient solutions to meet regulatory initiatives including the reduction of CO2, nitrogen and sulphur emissions. Shipowners are embracing this change and seeking new ways to maximise their operational efficiency. A simple and easy solution is to invest in a high-performance antifouling coating that not only delivers outstanding return on investment but also flexibility.

Intelligent solutions

Hempel, the worldwide coatings manufacturer, is always abreast of regulatory and industry initiatives. The company recently launched two new antifouling coatings – Globic 9500M and Globic 9500S – to improve the operational efficiency of a vessel and minimise the operator’s environmental footprint. This coating range offers customers a maximum speed loss of just 2.5 per cent that equates to significant fuel savings and lower CO2 emissions.

The Globic 9500 series combine the controlled polishing and controlled-release properties of a premium binder system (Nano-acrylate technology) with a premium biocide package containing four different biocides. This winning combination allows superior performance at different trading speeds and outperforms conventional self-polishing coating (SPC) technologies particularly during slow steaming conditions and new building outfitting.

New technology

By introducing an intelligent biocide package in the formulation, Hempel has combined biocides that complement each other. The concept is formulated on the fact that not all biocides have the same efficacy against the different microorganisms that proliferate in the marine environment. This smart biocide package can therefore provide a broader biocidal spectrum against a larger range of fouling organisms.

Globic 9500M (M for maintenance) is designed to protect against slime as well as soft and hard fouling in all conditions. Globic 9500S (S for static) is designed to protect against hard-fouling even during extended outfitting periods. Together these two coatings deliver unparalleled anti-fouling protection offering customers improved operational efficiency, flexibility and a high return on investment.

In addition, Hempel’s patented microfibre technology has been incorporated into the paint to enhance the mechanical properties to withstand stress and avoid cracking.
As the industry continues to evolve, versatility in product development has become mandatory to meet the varying needs of shipowners worldwide. Hempel is dedicated to investing heavily in R&D to continue to develop smart solutions for its customers. Solutions that are not only superior in performance but also adaptable, flexible and efficient – the time has come to think ‘outside the box’ when choosing your antifouling hull coating.
