Wärtsilä Ship Design wins seismic vessel to hotel conversion contract
Wärtsilä Ship Design has been contracted to design the conversion of seismic survey ship Viking II into a hotel vessel, by Dutch owner C-Bed.

In a diversification away from oil and gas as demand collapses, the newly converted ship will be used to accommodate and transfer service personnel working on offshore wind farms, with the rebuild to be carried out at the Fayard AS shipyard in Denmark. The work is slated for completion during Q1 2016.

Features to be added in the conversion include the ability of the vessel to accommodate 125 people, and deliver them to the turbines on a heave compensated gangway. The vessel will be renamed to 'Wind Innovation' once the changes are complete.

"This is a fast delivery project and it was essential that our naval architects could respond to the owner's needs quickly,” said Wärtsilä Ship Design Norway md Ove H. Wilhelmsen. “This we are able to achieve and our design will result in a vessel capable of operating efficiently in challenging sea and weather conditions with a high level of passenger comfort.”
