Wärtsilä to supply propulsion for first high-speed LNG ropax ferry
Wärtsilä is to supply a power, propulsion and fuel storage system for the first high speed LNG fuelled RoPax ferry, being built for Swedish operator Rederi AB Gotland at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) yard in China.

As well as being a high-speed first for RoPax ferries, the ferry will be the first Swedish-flagged passenger vessel powered by LNG. Once delivered in 2017, the 200 m long vessel will operate exclusively within the Baltic ECA zone, and is designed to comply with both the 0.1% sulphur cap and future IMO Tier III NOx regulations.

Wärtsilä is to supply the entire LNG fuel handling and power and propulsion system, scheduled for delivery late 2015, as well as comprehensive project management services, such as integration engineering, on-site support and extended commissioning The package will include four 50DF dual-fuel engines, two gearboxes, two controllable pitch propellers (CPPs) with remote control system, two Energopac rudders, two tunnel thrusters, four Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary generating sets, two Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel gas handling systems, gas valve units and a compact silencer system (CSS).

The company will also supply IMO approved Wärtsilä Aquarius UV ballast water management system, an Oily Water Separator together with a Bilge Water Guard to monitor and prevent oily water being discharged to the sea.

The vessel is intended to be “the first of an entirely new generation of fast, yet environmentally sound RoPax ferries” developed by Wärtsilä, Guangzhou Shipyard Internataional and Danish designers OSK-Shiptech, according to Wilco van der Linden, business development director of Merchant Cruise and Ferry at Wärtsilä Solutions.
