Focus on arbitration award enforcement with Chinese counterparties
With the growing business between the Middle East and China the enforcement of arbitral awards in China was in focus at the latest breakfast seminar by Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (EMAC).

Richard Strub, partner at Holman Fenwick Willan (HFW), examined the issues related to enforcing arbitral awards in Asia, the Middle East and beyond.
Particular focus was paid to dealing with Chinese counter-parties given the increasing trade with China and the impact this has on enforcement against assets in China.
Straub also examined the relationship closer to home for EMAC of that between the DIFC Courts and subsequent enforcement onshore, and the alternative of direct onshore enforcement under the new UAE arbitration law. He also looked at enforcing foreign awards in the UAE and wider GCC.
“The enforcement of arbitral awards is one of the most important processes in the arbitration process and understanding its implications is crucial,” said Majid Obaid bin Bashir, acting chairman and secretary general of EMAC.
