Sea Asia 2015 returns as anchor event to 10th Singapore Maritime Week
Singapore will host the 10th edition of the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) from 19-24 April, with Sea Asia 2015 as one of the anchor events, where industry players would have a chance to discuss key trends, opportunities and challenges facing the maritime sector today.
The annual SMW, organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), this year features 30 evetns and about 54,000 public participants and high-level delegates are expected to attend.
Andrew Tan, chief executive of MPA, said: “The Singapore maritime industry has transformed over the last 50 years. With the evolving maritime landscape, it is critical that we keep abreast of industry trends and work closely with partners to remain relevant for the next 50 years.”
Sea Asia 2015, a biennial international exhibition and conference, is now in its 5th edition since the first show was held back in 2007. Organised by Seatrade and Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), the show is expected to attract more than 14,000 participants from over 60 countries.
A key highlight will be the Sea Asia Global Forum, which will feature speakers including SS Teo, managing director of Pacific International Lines (PIL), Andreas Sohmen-Pao, chairman of BW Group, Khalid Hashim, managing director of Precious Shipping and Christian Clausen, president and group ceo of Nordea Bank.
The Singapore Maritime Lecture, into its 9th year, will have Tung Chee Chen, chairman of Orient Overseas (International) Ltd (OOIL), to share his insights on The Changing Dynamics of the Container Shipping Industry.
Two other notable events include the International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference and Exhibition (ICOPCE) 2015 and the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) Piracy and Sea Robbery Conference. ICOPCE will touch on topcis such as incident management, dealing with changing risk profiles and use of technology in managing spills.
The ReCAAP ISC will feature two scenario-based panel discussions using case studies based on real incidents that occurred in Asia.
Other key events include the inaugural Singapore Maritime Technology Conference, Asian Maritime Law Conference, 14th MPA Bunker Forum, Moore Stephens Shipping Conference, and Asian Marine Casualty Forum.
Singapore’s maritime sector contributes to 7% of the country’s GDP and employs over 170,000 people. Approximately 1,000 ships are in Singapore port at any one time with container throughput recorded at 33.9m teu and bunker sales of 42.4m tonnes in 2014.
“SMW aims to prepare maritime leaders with new thought leadership events and networking opportunities so that they can collaborate and better address new and complex challenges ahead. At the same time, we want to better and more closely engage the public to raise the profile of the maritime industry,” MPA’s Tan said.
