Insurer North P&I has become the latest member of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN).

MACN is a global business network with 165 companies that aims to tackle corruption in shipping and foster a culture of integrity.

Mark Church, Head of Sustainability, North P&I Club, said: “That over 50,000 anonymous incidents have been reported to the MACN since its foundation in 2011 highlights the importance of its existence. By joining the Network, we can contribute towards the elimination of a significant but under-acknowledged threat – and in doing so, help ensure that our members, and the maritime community at large, continue to trade with confidence.”

Meanwhile MACN and local partner in Nigeria, Convention on Business Integrity (CBi), has been awarded the Basel Institute on Governance’s Outstanding Achievement Award for their Collective Action work in Nigeria.

Soji Apampa, CEO and Founder of CBi, said: “As a result of our work there has been a quantifiable reduction in the number of corruption incidents reported through MACN’s anonymous incident reporting system. Prior to MACN’s Helpdesk operation, case resolution took up to 7 – 10 days. In 2021 MACN reported an average case resolution time of 1 – 8 hours.”

MACN CEO, Cecilia Müller Torbrand commented: “The shipping industry is often perceived as being behind the times when it comes to compliance trends. However, this award recognizes the fact that when it comes to our industry-wide collection action work, the systems we have developed and the measurable results we are achieving are some of the most effective in any industry and in any location the world.”
