Vopak prepares to import green ammonia into the Netherlands
Liquid bulk terminal operator Vopak is preparing import and storage of green ammonia at North Sea Port in the Netherlands.
The company said it can prepare two existing 55,000 cu m refrigerated LPG storage tanks, with berths, pipelines and other infrastructure also available at Vopak Terminal Vlissingen.
The terminal also offers space for other activities such as converting ammonia back into green hydrogen with ammonia being used as a carrier for shipping. Green ammonia can also be as carbon-free fuel for shipping itself.
The area where the terminal is located will also be connected to the Northwestern European hydrogen network.
Alexander Fokker, Managing Director Vopak Terminal Vlissingen: "Thanks to our existing infrastructure, we can offer customers a quick and economical solution. We also have room for new developments. Within Vopak we now have extensive experience with the safe storage of ammonia, a product in which additional safety precautions must be observed."
Vopak is yet to take a final investment on the plans, which are subject to market interest.
