DNV GL approves new LNG powered VLCC design at DSIC
DNV GL presented Approval in Principle (AiP) for a new LNG fuelled VLCC design from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DISC) at Marintec China 2015 on Tuesday.
The classification society also presented AiP for a jack-up rig design at DSIC and a signing ceremony for a classification agreement for a 20,000 teu containership design.
The design for an LNG-fuelled VLCC is the first to receive AiP. “This AiP is another step toward the more widespread adoption of LNG fuel for shipping,” said Torgeir Sterri, DNV GL vice president and regional manager in Greater China.
“The emissions and efficiency benefits of LNG mean it is almost sure to become an important part of the fuel mix over the next few years.”
LNG fuelled VLCC design features C fuel tanks located on the deck of the vessel so there is no impact on cargo capacity. According to Guan Yinghua, deputy technical director at DSIC, the vessel is capable of a round voyage from the Middle East to the US, some 23,000 nm, without refueling.
Meanwhile DNV GL also presented an AiP to DSIC for its new DSJ-500 jack-up rig design for drilling to 500 feet in depth.

There was also a signing ceremony for a 20,000 teu containership design with DNV GL, China Classification Society (CCS), Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipping (SWS) and Cosco.
