LNG infrastructure for the Rhine-Main-Danube area attracted EUR40m in subsidies to prepare the area for LNG as both cargo and fuel for vessels, while LNG breakbulk terminals in Gothenburg and Rotterdam received EUR34m.

The announcement was welcomed by Rotterdam Port Authority, which is endeavouring to establish a European LNG hub at the port ahead of 2015. Through a joint venture with the port of Gothenburg, Rotterdam will soon be capable of supplying LNG to the European bunker market via its breakbulk terminal.

The subsidies will also enable port authorities including Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Gothenburg and Antwerp, to develop further international regulations for the use of LNG as a marine fuel.
