Singapore port container volumes up 5.8% in Feb

Despite the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on the key Chinese container shipping market the Southeast Asian hub port of Singapore reported a 5.8% jump in volumes in February.

According to the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) the port handled 2.90m teu in February 2020 up 5.8% year-on-year. For the first two months of 2020 volumes were up 5.9% at 6.08m teu compared to 5.74m teu in the same period a year earlier.

Most other numbers for the port were positive in February with vessel arrivals in terms of tonnage up 9.4% year-on-year at 234.66m gt, the number of vessel arrivals increased 5.9% in February to 10,879, and bunker sales were up 2.6% to 3.88m tonnes in the second month of 2020.

Only cargo throughput in tonnes saw a drop in February 2020 falling 1% to 47.47m tonnes.
