The Fully Autonomous Ship Project is entering its second phase: “Testing”The Fully Autonomous Ship Project is entering its second phase: “Testing”
At the heart of the project, Furuno is committed to providing all the required technologies and sensors.

We are now entering the second phase of MEGURI2040, a project led by the Nippon Foundation, aimed at creating a fully autonomous ship with a clear objective: the implementation of all autonomous navigation technologies developed during phase 1 by 2025. The program will focus on achieving this main goal through four key areas:
1/ Conduct demonstration tests.
Four different types of vessels will be used and equipped with our most advanced instruments and technologies to test the autonomous capabilities of ships under real conditions (including a newly constructed container ship, an existing container ship, a RORO cargo ship, and a ferry).
\
2/ Standardize the technologies.
The goal is to install and demonstrate these technologies to standardize them according to international regulations for future commercialization.
3/ Strengthen our development process.
Simulating our autonomous navigation technologies under real conditions will allow us to gather sufficient data to further improve our simulation tools, risk assessment calculation methods, and everything related to the development process.
4/ Prepare society for this significant transformation and promote a promising industry.
This involves helping to create international rules to facilitate the smooth implementation of this new type of transportation, determining the creation of new jobs directly related to the autonomous navigation, considering dedicated training methods, and finally assessing the potential impact on our current societies.
Within this project, Furuno plays a significant role and has already provided a multitude of technologies and sensors. We have notably developed AR Navigation ENVISION, systems to assist in ship berthing, real-time risk visualization systems with the Risk Visualizer™, as well as remote maintenance and assistance systems with HermAce and FOP. Ultimately, the integration of all these technologies into a single system will bring us closer than ever to autonomous navigation, and this is the very objective that Furuno's engineers and developers are diligently working towards.
