In his keynote address, Captain Mohamed Al Ali, senior vice president, ship management, ADNOC Logistics & Services said battery power would provide a sustainable distribution option for the ADNOC group of companies.
He added that he saw a bright future for electric and hybrid vessels in specific applications as the shipping industry looks to comply with more stringent environmental regulations.
Al Ali said ADNOC Logistics & Services had chosen to use compliant fuels in order to meet the IMO 2020 sulphur cap. However, for its aframax tankers, the possibility of installing scrubbers next year is being explored.
Al Ali said LNG was a good solution for newbuild vessels, as it is expected to be a competitively priced fuel for the next decade. ADNOC is studying the potential of offering an LNG bunkering at Fujairah in the UAE, but as yet there is insufficient demand, he said.
Al Ali commented that ADNOC has already begun the slow process of cleaning its tanks ahead of IMO 2020 and he said ship operators need to be mindful of that all bunker suppliers will be doing this and this could impact fuel availability in the last few months of the year.
