The frigate, operating as part of anti-piracy operation Combined Task Force 151, arrested the suspected pirates after a Seahawk helicopter tracked the two skiffs and then directed the ship to their location.
Following a boarding and search of the two skiffs, the boats were scuttled and the nine suspects taken into custody, and are now being returned to Somalia.
Following the incident last week Dryad Intelligence warned against a resurgence of piracy in East African waters.
“It is clear that there are still pirates out there determined to generate income from taking merchant ships hostage. Mariners have been served a timely reminder of the perils of transiting the Somali coastline,” said Royal Australian Navy Commander, Brian Schlegel.
