The 165 000 sq m port, located new Aub Ghreib, will be the only one of its kind in Iraq, with storage space of 12,00 0teu. The port’s incorporated customs offices will give customers the option of clearing their cargo in Baghdad instead of Umm Qasr, which CMA CGM hopes will make shipping to inland Iraq more palatable.
Cargo is to be kept under surveillance by security services, with a container scanner to speed up operations.. The port’s location puts it in connection with the company’s inland transportation network, with a rail connection 3km away from the site and fast in bond transit from Umm Qasr.
